I’ll confess that I used to be a religious makeup wipes user until about 2018, where I discovered the double cleanse. This method consists of a first step where makeup is removed (usually with an oil based product) followed by a water based cleanser.

Using an oil based cleanser as your first step is a lot more effective at breaking down makeup and sunscreen. Makeup wipes tend to just move the product around your face, not necessarily cleansing it.

Having a clean canvas is essential so that the following products absorb better into your skin. I don’t necessarily have a preference between balms or oils, but I do look for ones that don’t irritate eyes or leave a residue.

Here are my top picks:

1. Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil

What we love:

- A little goes a long way

- Great value for the price per ml

- Soybean is great for nourishing the skin, I really like this one for the winter when my skin is much drier and flakier.

What we don’t:

- None ✨

2. Caudalie Cleansing Oil

What we love:

- Contains linoleic acid and oils high in linoleic acid, which are safe for acne prone skin. I’ve never broken out from this product or had any sort of irritation.

- Easily removes waterproof mascara.

- Easily accessible since you can get it at Sephora.

What we don’t:

- Can be a little pricey.

- Packaging isn’t very travel friendly, I had one bottle leak on me.

3. Paula’s Choice Cleansing Balm

What we love:

- Genius packaging, I personally feel like all cleansing balms should come in a tube. One of the reasons why I stay away from cleansing balms in general is because I don’t want to stick my finger in a tub. Thank you, Paula 🙏🏻

- A small amount goes a long way.

What we don’t:

- For us Canadians, it can take a while to get delivered.

- Isn’t the best at removing waterproof eye makeup in one go.

4. Farmacy Green Clean

What we love:

- Does a great job at removing sunscreen and waterproof makeup.

- Comes in a fragrance and fragrance-free version.

- Easily accessible at Sephora.

What we don’t:

- Leaves a film on the face after emulsifying, not a big deal if you’re using a second cleanse after though.

5. Palmers Therapy Cleansing Oil

What we love:

- Affordable and can be found at the drugstore.

- Leaves skin feeling soft.

What we don’t:

- Has fragrance.

- Can irritate eyes.

Sunscreen is the most important part of a skincare routine - I’ve heard it said that your skincare is pretty much ineffective if you don’t finish with a sunscreen. If you’re anything like me, you hate the smell of traditional sunscreen, the stinging eyes and the white cast.

I've tried many different sunscreens either from the drugstore or stores like Sephora and I've rounded up a few of my favorites. The thing I look for most in a sunscreen is how easy it blends - I do not want to be sitting there trying to blend it into my skin for 5 minutes. I also tend to lean more towards SPF 50 for more protection but during the winter, when I'm mostly indoors, SPF 30 works just fine.

Keep on reading if you'd like to know more about my recommendations!

1. Paula's Choice Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50

What we love:

- Lightweight, runny texture, I love using this one during the summer.

- Blends in easily with no white cast.

What we don’t:

- For us Canadians, it can take a while to get delivered.

2. Summer Fridays ShadeDrops Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Milk Sunscreen

What we love:

- Nice, lightweight feel, has a texture similar to a lotion.

- Doesn’t leave a white cast.

What we don’t:

- Has a faint smell.

- Only SPF 30.

- Bottle is quite small.

3. Supergoop! Every Single Face Watery Lotion SPF 50

What we love:

- Very hydrating.

- Easily blends in, no white cast.

What we don’t:

- Can be too glowy for oily skin types.

- Has a faint licorice smell.

4. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF 50

What we love:

- This is great for sensitive skin, it’s moisturizing and soothing.

- Blends easily with no white cast.

What we don’t:

- Not easily accessible.

5. Live Tinted Hueguard 3-in-1 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

What we love:

- Fragrance free.

- Blends easily with no white cast.

- Just the right amount of glow.

What we don’t:

- It has a bit of a thicker formula, like a cream. This isn’t really an issue, I quite like using this one during the winter.

- Not easily accessible for Canadians.
